Put in a reman. trans in my 90 Areo, it is a 4.0 engine, now when cold it will stay in 1st gear for about a 1/2 mile before shifting and when I engage the passing gear it will hang untill the engine flattens out, sound real bad when it does that, any ideas?
Modulator on the rear pass. side of the tranny-------is the rubber hose connected? If it is run your hand around it and see if at the middle of the body it is burnt closed or dry rotted. The exhaust is right there and will cause deterioration. Is the modulator leaking or wet?
It is common for these to do this. I have found that the governor likes to stick when cold. If the cooler and lines were not flushed clean this will cause debris to hang the governor.
Ways to fix
Remove extension housing, replace governor.
Try some Lube Guard additive and hope for the best.
This one is kind of crazy but I have been doing this for years and it works sometimes and its quick and easy. The governor is bolted to the park gear and if you get going about 15 to 30 mph and put the shifter into park for a quick second two or three times, the park paw ratchets over the teeth of the park gear creating a vibration and rattles the governor. This frees the valve. It wont catch in park because its spinning to fast, dont do this under 15 mph.
If this wont fix it you will have to replace the governor, or clean it by hand.
That happened to me when I left out the o-ring on the filter nipple. I guess the bad filter/valve body seal was keeping the system from drawing enough fluid from the pan.
You might try a filter/fluid change. Don't forget the o-ring and use synthetic fluid. Just a suggestion, assuming the rebuild was good.
