starter shims
Have replaced starter,coil,alt,etc:
but with a starter that seems to be the problem, how would one know how to go about adding shims and how much?
Are Both battery cables clean and secure?
Is the battery fully charged when cranking?
Is the starter solenoid properly grounded?
Have you bench tested the starter?
Is the starter drive well lubricated?
Has the engine & starter been sitting for an extended period of time?
Has the engine been recently re-built?
Can you turn the engine freely by hand(with or without removing the sparkplugs)?

I can`t be sure of the year this 400 is, though around 1972,
I do know a starter was put in place from a mid 70`s year,
fit well, but l now know that is`nt necessarily the case.
Still scrathing my head. How does one find out the year or the
motor?
I was thinking more > Automatic vs Manual trans.
What happened when you bench tested it?
I wish you would have answered each Q individually instead of a blanket reponse? It would help a lot more.
