ANybody have any ideas for fixing ABS? I have 2000 F-350 diesel and everyonce in a while when I slow up to pull into parking space or drive way ABS kicks on and almost slam into ****. I have 35's on my truck and a long time ago tire sliced right abs wire but I spliced it and been fine. I kinda think my problem was happening before this but been long time so can't remember. Any suggestions?
ABS is anti-lock, it pulses the brake fluid pressure to calipers. When an ABS system fails, it usually doesn't do anything to the brake system, leaving you with 25 year old lockable brakes.
If the brakes are suddenly engaging, I would look at the booster and master cylinder.
The system is "suppose" to go to sleep if it has a problem, but it reality, if a sensor is giving an erratic reading, it can pulsate the brakes on a normal stop. I've not only worked on countless cars & trucks with this problem, I've experienced this problem on one of my own cars years ago.
My best guess would be a sensor, but the only way to know for sure is to have the codes pulled to know where to start.
The concern is fairly common in lots of auto/truck lines especially in the northeast (salt) the ABS is a stupid computer just reads voltage signals from the sensors when rust builup under a sensor changes the air gap it fools the computer into thinking a wheel is locked or stopped when others are still rotating therefore activating abs often willl not set a code because really system is acting normally. go to open area where you can safely stop in a strait line remove hands from wheel and if false activation happens watch which direction steering wheell rotates to and usually problem is caused by the opposite side(if rotaes right likely left sensor dropping out causing fluid pulse to that brake in turn pulling towards the other side with constant brake)repair if sensor is good resistance and can be removed without damage often time good cleaning of sensor mount surface will cure note sometimes after this is done the other side will then have the larger gap and may fool ebcm.
