Hey y'all,
My buddy has a 93 F350 dually crewcab. The brake pedal will go all the way to the floor when held down. The master cylinder has been replaced twice from two different vendors. We have gravity and pressure bled it several times. Shoes, pads, drums, rotors, all appear to be in good shape. It does have abs. Any ideas as to what to do next?
Thanks
James
Have you checked for leakage from the calipers and the wheel cylinders? You might need to rebuild them, easy to do.
Are the brakes properly adjusted? If the rear is way out, you may be taking up all the "slack" by pushing the pedal to the floor.
Are the calipers properly lubricated along the slider rails and the slider pin? They may be sticking which makes the calipers appear to be out of adjustment like the drums above.
A wild chance, but maybe your rubber hoses are getting weak and they are swelling when you push the brake, worth a check.
I am not sure but something in the back of my mind is nagging me that there might be something about the power assist diaphram also possibly causing this kind of problem. I think I read that somewhere and it has been a long time.
James, I have gone through the same gambit with my 92' F-250. Two master cylinders, front pads, rear shoes, the whole nine yards. It wound up being the RABS valve on the frame rail. As soon as I replaced it, my problem was solved. Your truck could very well be completely different from mine but I would at least check out the ABS system.
A few things to look at.
1) My pedal would drift when slowing down. I would be able to pump it up but it would still drift again when continuing to slow down.
2) When at a stop, the pedal would pump up and stay firm.
3) I never lost complete brakes but the crazy spongy pedal would scare me every now and then. No loss of fluid ever.
The valve can be costly. My valve cost me approx $150.00 plus another $150.00 core charge.
I was stumped for the longest time and it was this website, (the FTE), that helped me out. Good luck. Jake.
To Jake and others My 92 F-150 does exactly that. Spongy when moving and pump up to hard pedal when at a stop. I checked with the junk yard and they say the abs valve (hydraulic control valve) is the same for 92 to 94 models so I will get a 94 model one from the junker and try it and let you know. As far as I know this is the only valve in the system (no proportioning valve for these years, just the earlier trucks). Cheers.
Hey all. I just bought a used RABS valve from the junker for $60.00 and installed it today. I have a 92 F-150 and Ford informed me that it's the same valve for 1990 - 1994 trucks. All my troubles are gone!! It works great. This one was off a 93 model and I coudn't be happier. This has plagued me for 6 months!! Do it. Cheers
