AC Compressor compatibility

Guys,

I bought my '91 7.3 with a dead/frozen AC compressor. Does anyone know the specific compressor model #, and if it's interchangeable with AC compressors from gassers of similar years?

If so, what year ranges work best? I don't know if it's ever been upgraded to R134a, but shouldn't matter.

Thanks! It's a little hot down here.

Joe

It should matter if your putting R-134a or R-12, you do not want to mix the two it will create sludge same if your mixing the two different types of refrigerant oil. An easy way to tell if it has been converted is that the fittings on the lines to put on gauges. If its a sharder valve like on your tire its R-12 if its a quick disconnect like the fittings on an air tools its R-134a. And R-12 uses black o-rings R-134a uses green.

Sorry for double posting lol, if your going to change to R-134a Just change the fitting and the O-Rings in all the lines. If you can find lines that ment for R-134a and replace the OEM ones get them. R-134a Molecules are smaller and seep through the lines so you'll have to recharge but I don't know how often.

Benbe71 - I have access to people who can convert quickly from R12 to R134a here in Florida.

My main question is what kind of AC compressor to get: can I use one from a Bronco/F150 gasser, or do we need a diesel-specific compressor?

Its not diesel specific. You should have an SF6 compressor. The basic design is very common on all the ford V8s of that era all the way up to the late 90s.

If your AC shop is worth anything, they will be able to identify the compressor.

I ask because I like to buy the parts I need beforehand, usually off eBay or Craigslist instead of buying new, when I can. Saves $$ for other things in life, like lunch when you're hungry.

Makes sense. You can post a pic just to be sure, but the SF6 is more than likely what you have.

your truck could have either an fs6 or a sanden compressor
they are interchangable , i changed mine from a sanden to an fs6
the only thing about switching to 134a is you must use pag or ester oil
the mineral oil used with r-12 is not compatible
also changing will not cause any so called sludge etc. in the system
your truck requires 10 oz. of oil
