Question Stripping Paint off a Fiberglass Door?

I have a fiberglass skinned door that has several layers of paint on it. I'm going to be repainting it again and I'd like to remover the layers of paint. I've heard that chemical strippers can dissolve the fiberglass so I'm probably not going to use that method. So what about a heat gun?

Careful with the heat gun as you could melt the fiberglass. If it was me. I would pressure wash the door a few times, and I believe that would remove any paint. Good luck!

I think they do make a stripper that is safe for fiberglass. Corvettes get stripped, as well as boats. Just did a quick search. There are quite a few products, see if our sponsors handle any.

There are at least three thick layers of paint on the door and it's starting to pull away around the window frames. It's a Therma Tru Fiber Classic door if that helps any.

as GLR said, you can use a brush on stripper to remove the old paint... you just have to be careful not to leave the stripper on for very long, should work in under 10 minutes
and may need two 2 applacation's... use a plastic putty knife along with a small nylon brush to scrub the paint out of the faux wood Grain.( If the door has that finish) Do not use heavy sand paper because it will damage the fiberglass if you sand too deep

you'll want to use a methylene chloride-based stripper. like Bix or stripx
just work a 1 foot square at a time

What may work in ten minutes here might only take 3 where you are at.... weather plays a part in how that kind of stripper works,
You prolly want to wear goggles and rubber gloves. That stuff can easly splash around and burns like hell! so be careful!

I would stand the door up in a place you can take the water hose to it for cleaning

What about por15?

They have a chemical paint stripper that might work.

Check it out.

I saw some stripper that (I think) was called 'Strip Eze'.

You brush this stuff on, apply a layer of 'special paper' over it, allow it to do it's job, then peel paper and paint off.

I don't know if it is safe for fiberglass, though.

Just a thought. . . . .
