Cool Re painting a door.

My father purchased a new screendoor and installed it. It is tan. All the other doors and windows on the house are white. Taking it back is not an option. Does anyone know how to re paint an aluminum door wit something that will stand up to years of use. It looks bad, and ide like to fix it soon.

Just scuff it down with steelwool or a scotchbrite pad and then spray it with white rustoleum.I have done this a few times and have never had a problem.

You could probably lightly rough the surface up with one of those green things they use to do dishes with, spray it with an enamel or brush paint it with a good exterior latex. Latex paints are a lot better than they used to be and are much easier to use than enamels. It's a simple chore and shouldn't take you much time at all. Justg make sure its clean, free of grease or wax and go for it.

FL55 is pretty close. He's only wrong in saying to use an exterior latex. Only the absolute cheapest exterior paints use latex anymore. What you want is a high-quality exterior acrylic. Sand the door with 150-220 grit sandpaper, just enough to scuff it up for a good mechanical bond. Laying the door flat helps for painting, if possible, but it's not necessary. I'd recommend Sherwin-Williams' Super Paint exterior acrylic for this, pick your sheen (flat, satin, semi-gloss, high-gloss). Apply with brush, roll or spray.

Don't use any sort of exterior oil. The reasons are too numerous.

While we're on the topic...

How would you paint an OLD aluminum door? Dark, with lots of "pits" (actually, little bumps). Same thing- just rough it up and spray it? Any suggestions? I've posted this question on several homeowner-DIY sites and never really got an answer.

On aluminum, I would sand, prime, and paint with the door off and laying flat so I would not get runs, especially around the pits. With it laying flat it is much easier to give it multiple light coats to avoid drips and sags.
