I have a 51 ford truck with a 351w I think its a 73 or 74 . Has points and condenser in distributer. How many volts should show on the positive termanal of coil. I checked and it shows 12.5 and up. There is a white resistor on the fire wall what is this for? How do you know if it is bad. How do you check. Thanks for the help I wanted to check this out Iam going to install a pertronix this weekend.
12.5 is high, IMHO. It should be closer to 9 with the key to run and engine off, points open.
There usually is a ballast resistor, or a resistance wire, to step the voltage down. I beleive it is to increase point and coil life.
In that type of system you can see battery voltage when the key is held to start.
To check this resistor remove it from the circuit. Set your multimeter to resistance and measure across it. If it reads infinity than it is open. Resistors hardly ever short but it is a possibilty so make sure it is not 0.0 ohms too.
