A latch rod clip on my tailgate broke and now the tailgate won't open. I can get new rod clips from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard but have installation questions.
Anybody have any handy installation tips to replace this clip? Is it possible to replace the latch rod clips without removing the handle assembly and/or latches?
You do have to remove the tailgate handle, but it's very easy - just three bolts. Once you have it out, install the rod lock clips into the handle first by pushing them into the holes on the handle. Then slip the rods into the rod lock clips, then swing the clips around until they snap onto the rods. You can leave the hinges and rods in the tail gate, it just takes some "wrestling" to get them in there through the handle opening. It's easier if you start with the top rod first, then do the bottom rod last. It just takes some time.
If you try to install the clips onto the rods first, you won't be able to push them into the handle. Good luck!
I have heard that METAL replacement clips for these can be found in the "help" section (section with odds and ends like generic window cranks, etc.) at autoparts stores. I haven't verified this, but since the stock, plastic ones tend to break the metal ones might be a nice upgrade. Plus I bet they'll be cheaper than getting them from a supplier like Jeffs.
It's worth a look if you haven't bought the ones from Jeff's yet.
jason my advise would be spend the extra time to take every thing apart and clean and grease all moveing parts i have done that with my tailgate from day 1 and 30 years later it works like brand new you would be amased at how much dirt and old grease there is in there regurds joe
im with miotti. take the whole thing apart while you need to and clean it and grease the heck out of it. mine didnt work when i first got it, not it works better than my 98
Thanks for the tips everyone. I ordered parts from JBG so I'll take a stab at it this weekend. Great advice on cleaning/greasing - I'll make sure to do that while I have it apart.
