I have a 1997 F250 460/Auto that is in need of a transmission. Do any of you have a particular rebuilder that you use?. I got a price from the dealer for a Reman ($1925) and was wondering if that was the way I should go. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Mike
i would price a new if possible. then compare warranties. after you do that make decision. alot depends on what you use the truck for. if the tranny gets worked or babied. if it gets worked alot then i would go with the better warranty
just be careful i have my own personal horror story about taking a cheaper rebuild. i didnt even take the cheapest, but next to it. it was 2000 (cdn funds), they ended up costing me another 4000 to fix the problem. now its an @$$ Kicker. The shop screwed up and it didnt work, I kept taking it back throwing the same codes. throttle positioning sensor, and neutral safety. i replaced them and same thing.. after a few times of the same codes they voided my warranty and basically told me to **** off. problem ended up being the offshore **** they installed made the tranny run in limp mode. SO all i'm warning you is if there is smoke there's fire.. I'm not trying to scare you into spending 4G's, as 2G's USD should get you something decent. ALSO they are big and awkward to take out yourself unless you have a good selection of tools and hoists and trans jacks. i didnt do that myself the second time, let the shop do it.
The E4OD is an expensive tranny to replace, there's no way around that. Also, you get what you pay for. If you cut corners you will regret it sooner or later. If it was my truck, I would go straight to Ford for a reman. After all, the original lasted for 10 years, why wouldn't you trust a replacement from the same guys to last as long?
Yeah if you are getting a complete tranny go with the Ford Remanufactured unit. Nobody can touch their price/warranty that I know of. I have decided to rebuild my own for the experience gained (plus I'll know what's in there) and I just dropped about $1600 in parts alone including shipping so $2000 for a finished unit with a 100K mile warranty from Ford is not a bad deal at all.
In the interest of full disclosure, a rebuild on your unit would not cost as much as mine. Mine is a 1993 model so it needs a lot more hard part upgrades ($$$) than your 1997 would.
If you are going to keep the truck i would get a "Factroy Rebuild" I priced mine for when the time comes to replace it. My 4R70W New Threw ford with a 3Yr/36,000 MIle waranty is $2,400.
The E40D Will be even more, Another way to go is call Jasper !
Thanks to all that replied...I got a price from another dealer of $1750 with a 36 month 100,000 mile warranty. No question in my mind as to what to do. Thanks again, Mike
