Power Steering Filter
These look to be interesting-----love to know a bit more for possible use on my '00 E250 with mega miles, soon to get a new engine.
I am seriously considering trying one on my 94 Taurus AXODE tranny, that likes to act up once in a while.
Seeing as how after adding the inline filter to the Taurus & Rangers P/S system, both have remained shudder free & the Taurus P/S pump is still quiet, it seems a Magnefine in the Taurus P/S return line is removing something the system didn't like, so it may have something to offer if installed in the tranny return line too.
My Ford Dealers Service Manager said they use Magnefines on all of their P/S & Transmissions after repair service & they've cut come backs Way down. Many newer vehicles now come from the factory with inline P/S fluid filters.
So it seems from all the positive info, with no negatives so far, that I've been able to come up with, that it won't likely hurt, but might help, if fluid deposits or debris are causing mischief, like they seemsd to be for me on my intermittent P/S off center shudder problems.
So if a tranny is more persnickety about fluid particles & debris mucking things up, it would seem to me that better tranny fluid filtering should help. The Magnefine is designed to be used on a tranny, it has a large filter media surface area that provides good flow & low pressure drop across the filter & a built in bypass valve, just in case its filter media should become clogged with debris, it'll just go into bypass mode like an engine oil filter, so fluid continues to flow, but the magnet still grabs ferrous debris, so we still get some filtering even in the bypass mode.
If the tranny innards are clean, we should be able to get 30K miles on a Magnefine, less if the tranny is dirty inside, or we use something like SeaFoam Trans Tune to tidy it up a dirty tranny or P/S system, but don't remove the Magnefine before/during a flush.
My 2 Magnefines seem to be holding up ok, however the Taurus one seems to be sweating some fluid vapors under the label from around the body threads where the Magnefine is screwed together. It's not dripping any fluid, it's sorta like an oil film on the large dia end where it's screwed together, like the threads, or whatever they use to seal them didn't fit tight enough, or didn't get enough sealant. The other filter on the Ranger is clean/dry & tight, no signs of leaking/sweating fluid.
So, consider giving one a try, but it's designed to be used in the tranny return line from the cooler. They come with different barb sizes to fit various line diameters, so make sure you get the right size so it'll fit your tranny return line ID with a snug fit & orient/install the filter correctly, matching the filter flow arrow with fluid flow direction.
Use the Magnefine in line, with the tranny pan filter in place. If you remove the tranny pan filter, the tranny pump won't be able to suck up any fluid from the pan, so the tranny won't work & if you run the engine long enough without the tranny pan filter in place, it'll ruin the tranny pump, so don't even think of doing that!!!!
