Correct- the replacement Bosch sensors that you buy at Autozone,etc are just...well,garbage.

Could be wiring, for sure...
There's no need to disconnect the battery. If you do, you'll have to re-program your radio and your clock.

Simplest on a 97 or 98 is to locate that little fuse box back in the corner under the driver's side hood hinge and remove the small value fuse (5A, IIRC) for 10-15 minutes while the key is OFF.

This removes the keep-alive power from the computer only and it will reset to manufacturer's defaults. Observe the note in your owner's manual regarding drivability after disconnecting or replacing a battery.
