ignition coil

on a 1979 f-150 with a 351m why am i getting about 13 to 14 volts to the ignition coil and how to fix it. that is when it is running

Sounds like a previous owner redid the wiring. If this is the stock coil, you need to drop it down to 7-9 volts. The way this is done in the stock wiring is with a resistive wire that drops the voltage down. The primary winding of a stock ignition coil is on the order of 1 ohm, so it takes about 0.8 ohms in series upstream of the coil power to get you close to 8 volts. You can find a stock wiring harness in a junkyard, or even easier would be to get a stand-alone automotive grade resistor from a parts store. Old Chryslers used this setup and it's the easiest to retro-fit when a previous owner doesn't know what he's doing and thinks he can do a better job at wiring a vehicle. This is all assuming you are running the stock coil. Some performance aftermarket coils do take the full battery voltage.

now that i got the voltage down the coil is still getting so hot that i can't touch it how can i stop that
