Bought a used 16ft car hauler and was wondering what size winch I can get by with? I know in this case bigger is better, but I hate to spend half what I paid for the trailer. I don't plan on loading anything that won't at least roll.
I bought a 7500lb winch by Champion @ Sam's club for about $200. It has loaded dead F250's with no problem on my 20Ft flatbed. Champion Power Equipment - C80295
My 9000 lb Superwinch EPi 9.0 has pulled a 9000 lb John Deere tractor out of mud up to its axles. Had to use a ****** block, and had to chain the Jeep to a tree, but the winch pulled the tractor out just fine. I can't imagine a 9000 lb winch not being able to get a rolling pickup truck on level ground up onto a flatbed trailer.

A 6000lb would generally get it done, as long as its rated for the AMOUNT of use, not nessesarily the weight. A light duty 9000lbs will blow out far faster than a 6000 Warn, for example.
A 6000lb winch can be doubled to a 12000 by adding a pulley (****** block), as long as your cable is long enough. It just takes twice as long to load.
1) deck height
2) ramp length
3) rolling weight
4) winch position (deck height or above)
There are calculators to figure out loads put on the winch. For most winches you are far better off putting only 30 feet or so of cable on the winch instead of leaving 100 feet of cable on the drum.
> wondering what size winch I can get by with?
Occasional use you can get by with a 6k <$100 boat winch, depending on your setup.

Agreed on the less cable is better remark, since winches are rated for most pulling power on first wrap of cable on the drum, less pulling power on each successive layer of cable on drum. I would want enough cable to reach a ****** block attached to whatever you were pulling, sure its only half as fast, but the winch gets double the pulling power and works less.
My trailer is only rated 7000 gross and the heaviest thing I own is 4000 lb. Ran across a 3000 lb. Champion for under $100, figured I'd ****** block it and see how long it last's. Probably only get used maybe twice a year.
