Towing with a 5.4 Excursion

Hello my name is Troy and I am new here. I recently purchased a 2002 2wd Excursion, 5.4 engine from a coworker. It is in like new condition , loaded with 79000 miles and I paid 7 thousand which I thought was a good deal . I have a 3 year old handicapped son so this vehicle was an absolute blessing to us because trying to fit 4 people and a wheelchair into a PT Cruiser takes some yoga not to mention that I am 42, stiff necked and 6 feet 5 inches tall ! The Ex gets us around fine and we love the vehicle . We drove from western N.C. to Savannah recently and I was very surprised by the decent gas mileage, 18.9 on the interstate doing 65 . My question is would I have a problem towing a camper that weighs around 5500 or 6000 pounds loaded ? I have the factory hitch and the tranny cooler. I have owned several Ford trucks and 1 GMC Yukon ( never again ! ) The previous trucks I owned had the 300 straight 6 or the 302 v8 so the 5.4 doesnt seem underpowered at all to me . Any thoughts ? Thanks

I pull a 30 footer, you will not win any races, but it get the job done

These motors where made to "rev" so push the pedal down & it will pull it

I get about 14.9 at best not pulling my camper, with the camper I get about 9
on the small rolling hills around Ohio

Congratulations on the purchase, I have a 2000 F250 with 250k miles and the 5.4L still pulls. I have towed a few trailers recently over 6000lbs and didn't have any issues. Towed very easy, wasn't to bad of a trip but I had towed similar trailers with a Tahoe with a 350 and it was slow when towing that weight. With the F250 I could barely feel there was a trailer on it, the only difference I noticed was that the truck didn't move when I let go of the brakes from a stop.

I had a 06 F250 with the 5.4, had the tow/haul mode. Great motor towed my 7500 lb trailer trailer all over the place and it did great.

You should have a owers manual indicating the rating, if not go to ford.com and do some searching and you should be able to find it there. I would think you will be fine it is has the tow package. I think you got a good price.

I towed a few campers with my 1999 Excursion 5.4 4X4 with tow package (3.73 rear gears)

With my 4300 pound 25 ft ultra light, the Expedition was very happy and I could barely tell it was there. I could not tow in OD but mileage was almost always 10 (not bad since I usually got 13 around town)

With my current trailer the Expy was OK (30 ft 6000 or so LBS). It could handle the weight and length but I knew it was there. I wasn't going to win any races but it was still a fairly comfortable tow. Mileage was down to 9 or less.

Now with the Excursion I can barely tell it is back there. Can tow with OD and get between 8.5 and 9.5. (not bad since I only get 10.5 to 12 around town)
