lockers for your rear axle(ford10.5in) can range from $300some(lockright)to $700(detroit) id go with lockright or detroit you dont have to worry about air lines and the are cheaper and simpler. a locker will lock all the time except when you turn on pavement
If you don't apply power while going around a corner, then the automatic lockers (Lockrite, Detroit, etc) will remain unlocked and allow the wheels to turn at different speeds.
If you apply power, they lock up and one will want to slip on the pavement; not really an issue with a rear locker, but it affects turning ability with a front locker.
Of course, on the street, you're never running in 4wd on dry pavement, so an automatic front locker will never come into play and for all practical purposes be invisible. If you put it into 4x4 in the snow, though, the locker will increase the slide of the front end when you get on the gas, so 4x4 becomes practical only at low speeds in deeeeep snow.
This sounds like what I had done in 1975. I had money then and just didn't care. I dropped if off at the shop and told them I wanted all 4 working off-road, but still be streetable. Sounds like you ain't gonna get that done for a grand anymore though. Thats the same truck I rolled down the San Gabriel Canyon and the insurance company wanted to total and I made them fix it. It sure worked good though as long as I could keep the shiny side up.
NASCAR runs Detroit lockers, there great. but if i was to put anything in the front diff it would be True Trac. Also in the rear it makes anything handle the road wet or dry.
