first thing that came to my mind was heater core when i saw the topic, then especially when you described the smudging on the windshield definitely sounds like heater core to me. This is something that is sometimes worth it to take a weekend and do yourself. save some coin although they usually are a bitch to get at on trucks with passenger air bags

i agree it could be the heater core.

check to see if youre low on engine coolant. that would be a indicator

The heater core is connected to the engine's cooling system. Hot engine coolant circulates through it for the purpose of heating the truck during the winter months. It also allows the air conditioner to regulate the temperature in the cab by blending some hot air with the cold air to obtain the desired air temperature. This is done by the blend door which is controlled by a stepper motor that is controlled by the temperature ****.
