Well, I took my truck into rebuilder yesterday, and he thinks it is in the over/underdrive???? It has a Gear Venders unit, but my question is this, if it's the unit, why would it make a ticking sound (like something being stuck into fan blade) and not hold the truck in park???? I trust, the guy but???? It seems to shift fine when in drive and the Overdrive unit shifts fine? I hope to be back on like latter tonight, gota go again. Run, Run, Run, Run!!!!
Now this ticking sound (like something being stuck into fan blade) You get this when You park on a hill?
If You can back up and the GV shifts in and out of gear going forward it's NOT the GV unit.(remember that's $2500)
If You park on a grade or hill and Your at full stop, You shift into park, You take Your foot off the brake, The truck starts rolling making a ticking sound that is normally the parking pawl & Output Shaft Parking Gear worn out or Your shifter is so far out of adjustment Your not getting in park but all Your other gears would be just as out of place. You can see the parking gear and pawl by pulling off the GV unit they are just right there to look at. That's the end of the good news if the gear is damaged You have to disassemble the whole trans. If it's the pawl and the gear will live You can change that out right there.
That is what I thought, I couldn't see how it would be the Gear Vender unit. It makes that ticking sound even when you park it on level ground. I think it's that gear you're talking about. What do I tell this guy if he tries to tell me it is the G/V U/O drive unit? It didn't have reverce the first time it was rebuilt and it made the same sound then also.
Not sure but I think the park gear is removed out the rear once the tail housing is pulled off. I know the park gear in the later E4OD is removed that way.
Now wait a minute are You saying it makes this sound sitting still!!
Unfortunately that's not so in a C6 the governor is to the rear of it and that flange don't come off.
Yes, when you stop and put the trans into park it makes the ticking niose. When you try to put it into reverse, it does nothing, but sometimes it will shudder and it does not go backward. It is very frustrating!! Nice ride!! I bet you get a lot of people taking double takes when they hear a diesel sound from your truck.
This might be totally WRONG but I've had a 2wd Dodge p/u and my Cherokee both make a ticking noise because the sheetmetal inspection cover had gotten pushed back into the torque converter bolts.
Obviously that has nothing to do with "park" and it "ticks" most all of the time.
This is probably not your problem but might be worth checking out. I pried on them gently with a screwdriver and pushed on different areas until I figured out how to reshape them back to normal.
It drove me nuts but it was an easy thing to fix.
Well that's a horse of a different color. Yes that is what it says in the GV book will happen when Your GV fails. Never had anything go wrong in the two I have but I think You have to send them in to GV for repair. I'd give GV a call next.
The ticking still has Me stumped. Do You get park at all I mean will it hold the truck in place with the parking gear?
Nope, it will not hold the truck in park, especialy if it is on slight decline. It doesn't make the ticking sound all the time, just when you put it into park and only for a few seconds, then stops. When you put it into reverse, nothing, it doesn't even try to back up. Crap! I hope it's not the G/V unit!!
Well, the trans shop said that when he took the GV unit off and opened, the clutches were shot. Bummer!! He took the GV unit off and put on the back piece of trans and new drive shaft and new seal, it was $349. I have all the GV stuff, what should I do with it? I don't think it would make too good of boat anchor?I'm going to try to contact GV and wee why it failed.
Sounds like you have a good trans shop. I would not toss the GVOD just yet. See if you can have it repaired or even try to repair it yourself. If not, I'm sure a few guys here will dispose of it for you.
