i have an '00 expedition with the factory wiring harness with brakes, etc. i want to put a winch on my ar trailer and i know there is a spot on the wiring that supplies 12v to the trailer. is there a fuse/relay for it that can handle powering the winch? it is a smaller winch but id like to avoid haveing a second plug
That 12v pin is normally used to charge breakaway batteries and is hot only when the ignition key is on. Unless that winch's amp draw is VERY low, you'd be better off running a dedicated circuit - JMHO.
Definately run your own dedicated wire... winches draw WAY too much amperage. Your winch's manual should give you guidance on the gauge of the wire you need for that distance. The other thing you can do is run a seperate batter on the trailer, then run a charging wire to the battery from your truck's. That'll load a car onto a trailer, but it may not last very long!
I went with the second battery. Used a deepcycle marine battery. worked out really well. They take a lot of abuse and just charge it when you get home.
thanks guys. my buddy has wiriing to the back and front for a plow and spreader setup. then he uses the same one for the winch on his trailer. i didnt really want to do an extra plug.
if i put a battery on the trailer will the alternator keep up with the battery for the break away and for the winch?
