After searching, reading and researching the forum for a stubborn ABS light problem I finally lucked up and fixed it. The wire from the right front hub that goes up to the frame had rubbed on the tire when cutting the wheels sharp and wore one of the two cinductors in two. It was hard to spot ! I cut the bad place out, butt spliced the two conductors with dielectric grease filled splices. Big Bubbles, No troubles ! Light out and ABS working as it should. Eventually I'll replace the sensor and wire.
I changed out the VSS before I found it but still feel like I got off light. I always try to make things more complicated than they are. It's rule number one, check for conductivity, corrosion and connection. Lots of troubles are simple. On this one, the culprit was one of the retainer clips or holders that came loose and let the wire contact the tire. It's secured with a zip tie till I can do better.
Hope this helps somebody else looking for ABS relief !
Does the ABS light throw a code? Mine came on today for the first time in about 100k miles. Last time it was the VSS, is that the lifetime for the sensor? First time I drive the truck in weeks and this has to happen. As an example, in the past 2 months I have put 300 miles on my truck and over 1900 on my Vdub. So what's the story on the light?
Mark, when you first turn the key on, the light should flash a code, like two flashes, then seven flashes (27), or three flashes then two (32), before it stays on solid. See if you can figure out what code it's giving you.
Thanks for your post c125bob. Wiring problems usually tend to show up in the same locations, so it's nice to have an idea where to look.
I don't remember mine giving a flashing code. It might have and I didn't notice it. I do know there's some evil force that is emitted from a lit up ABS light that was making me crazy.
I haven't had any problem since I repaired the wire on the front left.
