i purchased the truck a few weeks ago. not knowing anything about it (maintenance history) i decided to change the oil and fuel filters. the morning after, the truck was difficult to start and once it did, lots of white smoke rolled out. every morning after is this way. i did throw in a little Lucas additive in the tank when i changed the fuel filters.
the truck is a 2005 F350 w/ 114,000 miles on it. used motorcraft filters for oil and fuel. i used 4 quarts of Lucas, and 10 quarts of Rotella. outside temperatures have been in the 60s.
so you're mixing the lucas and the rotella? Or putting the lucas in the fuel? That still wouldn't explain the white smoke but just wondering. The white smoke is either fuel or coolant. Fuel could be leaking into "A" cylinder(s) and when you start it it's too cold to burn it off or it could be a leaky egr cooler and once the hot exhaust gas gets to it it burns it off and you get that white smoke or steam. Smell the white smoke. If it's sour then it's probably fuel and if it's not then it's probably coolant. Coolant seems to smell a little more thick or musty to me.
could it be excessive fuel in the cylinders? yes, mixed the Lucas with the Rotella. bad idea?? i also bought the Lucas fuel additive and added 3 oz. this all started after i did the oil change and fuel filters. before this the truck started OK. had a bit of a rough idle at first (No white smoke), but cleared up quickly. it also would buck and hesitate when starting out. once it started warming up, it was fine.
The only real way to know is to change out the oil. I would actually change it, run it a little (just enough to circulate the oil for 10-15 minutes), then change it again. A full oil charge for a totally dry engine is 19 quarts IIRC. When you change your oil, you are always leaving in 4-5 quarts of the old stuff.
Actually I might even change it 3 times:
- starting w/ 4 quarts of Lucas
- left with a little less than 1 quart of Lucas after the first oil change
- left with .3 quarts after the second change
- left with .07 quarts after the 3rd change.
bigredtruckmi - good post on the link to the past thread!
