Off topic (6.0 question)

Ok...Im looking at a 2004 f-250,of course, with a 6.0 in it....NOW.. my question is, are the 6.0's that bad and if so whats so bad...sorry I know this has been covered before but I had rather post a question to my bretheren rather than do a search .also...can I have my DP tuner reburnt for the 6.0, and also is the turbo the same as my 7.3( wondering about my ATS housing) Im not wanting to make major H.P.but would like to mod. it enough to have a pair...if ya know what I mean...lol the '04 is just alot nicer than my '99... Oh well any advice or info would be GREATLY appreciated....
Thx...Schlepprock.....I know this is a 7.3 forum but I wanted to ask the guru's...

The DP's not going to work with a 6.0, and the turbos are completely different. 6-Oh's are completely different, and it takes a mechanical engineering degree to understand one.

By 2004 they had some, but not all, of the infant bugs worked out of that engine, but you can still have your share.

Depending on what you want to do with the truck, you may be better-off sticking with a school-bus engine.

Yea, the later trucks are much-nicer "appointed" inside.

What do you want (or need) a truck for?

Not a chance on pretty much ANY parts sharing between the two. I would only consider an '06 or '07 6.0 myself. My buddy has an '05 and it's had all the upper gaskets (including head gaskets), EGR, turbo, and quite a few injectors replaced.

The only thing between the two engines you can use interchangeably ( I think I made that word up) is the diesel fuel. It seems like after 05 the engines are hit or miss. My dads 05 has 55,000 miles on it now and its starting to act up, but those are mostly towing heavy loads and he does run it a little hard. A low mile 07 would be my bet, as long as you can still get the factory warranty.

If you like the interior so much better, why not just find a wrecked 6.0 and swap interiors? Then you've got the "reliable-as-an-anvil" 7.3 with the nice interior bits.... or get a custom interior done?

Out of curiosity, what is it about that 6.0's interior that you like so much?

Hey man if it ain't broke, don't fix it I'll admit a newer truck seems nice sometimes but I think you'll find yourself in the future regretting getting rid of your 7.3. If you want a newer one. . . and you aren't looking for high HP numbers. . . look for an 03 7.3.

Look for an 05 or newer truck if you are looking to change. The rest of the truck remained unchanged in 04 and the engine alone is not worth the hassle of getting a new truck.

I think the 6ohs are alright, providing you put head studs on them, then delete the egr, then replace the turbo and injectors with whatever the real solution is for them.. I think if you want them to last, thats what you need to consider. Our 07 has been in a couple of times for "turbo cleaning" and some HPO lines have blown, but the HPO lines could happen to anyone, thats not a 6oh problem. It also weighs 12k pounds, so it has to work for its money. If I drove it though, it would have the above.

Man, that's alot of coin to put out just to make it as reliable as what he's got already... plus he'd have the purchase cost on top of that too... not for me, man, no way. I went the 7.3 route because of it's reliability. A new interior is the way I'd go

Yea, but thats how you make them reliable for a long time IMO. Remember, we need to fix our turbo surge, fix our crappy t/c and upgrade the trans, possibly BO and get injectors/turbo combo on our trucks to keep up with the 6oh with just good programming. Pick your own poison. Biggest concern for the 99 and even my 02, is underside rust. But I drive on the highway alot, in bad conditions, and PennDot is doing their best to comply with the vehicle manufacturers request, to destroy the underside of my and everyone elses vehicle.

Also, Im not trying to sit here and tell everyone that the 6oh is great and such, because I still love everything about my 02, just saying, with the right improvements, they can live above all the negative that most see. Just as we have done to ours. The right improvements make everything
