Tall intake ports and they have the extra material cast in for the car exhaust manifolds. The early heads have the bigger intakes, but the exhaust for a unibody car can not be adapted to them.

The older heads (large ports) work better for big cubic inches or high revs. The 390 GT used the small port heads and made good torque and horsepower (325 to 335) all at less than 5000 rpm.
