Tall intake ports and they have the extra material cast in for the car exhaust manifolds. The early heads have the bigger intakes, but the exhaust for a unibody car can not be adapted to them.

The bugger detail with the exhaust makes them more desireable to car owners. With a truck you don't have the clearance problems like cars have.

Here is a short read from that other forum:
332-428 Ford FE Engine Forum: Can anyone provide info/ application of C6AE R heads? n/m

Use the search function over there, much to be learned.

Early intake ports on the left, later on the right.

Thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know if the chambers on these models were of a certain cc, or do they vary widely?

The later heads (small ports) were developed to increase fuel/air mixture velocities to improve low end preformance on street engine. The older heads (large ports) work better for big cubic inches or high revs. The 390 GT used the small port heads and made good torque and horsepower (325 to 335) all at less than 5000 rpm.
