1. Improved heat management. Aluminum transfers heat much more readily than cast iron, and therefor gets the heat from the cylinders' compression chambers into the water jacket more efficiently.
2. Weight reduction. Those cast iron cylinder heads are very *heavy*, when compared to aluminum heads.
From what I've read you can run about a half point more compression on aluminum without detonation. Also aluminum is much more repairable than cast (cast has a tendency to crack around the weld) and is more workable when porting and polishing.
