when she leaks...

oh yeah and i know yours leaks too haha dont lie.
more like marks its territory. but the way i see it is, if i put a quart of oil in here once every 3 weeks, then every 3 months its like i'm changing my oil! haha, the filter is a different story, and i know some nasty oil probly accumulates at the bottom of the pan, but that fresh quart just blends right in the way i see it and i dont need to ever change my oil !

Except that all the acids built up from combustion blow-by are getting more and more concentrated and building up to the point one day the leak will be from the hole eaten in the oil pan itself.

I have to say and this is no lie that my 67 (390\3.03\9") does not leak a drop of anything. I can park it on concrete and leave it for days and come back and theres not a drop.

(knock on fake woodgrain) seriously.

Wow..........mine eats a qt every tankful. I"ve resealed the valve covers a few times, but they still seem to start to leak after a few months again.

Hey, it's got 150Kmiles on it........so I don't complain. Now the worse part is it leaves rust(from the body) more then oil LOL!! Not sure if it will survive another winter sitting outside?

A couple of years ago the local power company here upgraded their fleet and the first thing they did was have the service mechanic weld the drain plugs in the pans. A new oil filter and top off the oil. They call it a running change.
But they only keep the vehicles a few years.

When I got my '72 F250, the PO told me not to go by the line on the dipstick because it was pulled out of a car 390, but to fill over by a quart. When I had some work done on her, the mechanic noticed it also and said "I dremel-ground a line on the dipstick for you @ 6 quarts." So I kept adding to that line. At the same time, I started getting a severe "leak" somewhere abouts the fuel pump/oil filter/dipstick general area. It was losing a quart in 200-300 miles, whereas before it was a quart every 1000. Needless to say I replaced and resealed everything, and to no avail, till about 6 months ago when I realized the line that guy ground on the dipstick was when 7 quarts was in the pan and was spitting out the dipstick tube! There must be a lot of clearance in that crankcase because for all that time, I never once saw the oil foam up. Now I'm back to a quart every 1000.

wow. that situation sounds pretty fishy to me. i cant imagine a car 390 being much different than a truck 390. 5.5 quarts is all i ever put in it. overfilling your oil is not good.

I'm paraphrasing numberdummy from a previous post in another thread, so forgive me if the details aren't exact. But I remember him saying (and it's consistent with my situation) that the cars had 5 quart pans (5.5 with filter) and the trucks had 6 quart pans (6.5 with filter) with the FE 390. But perhaps the horses mouth will chime in. If i'm wrong on this, I sure will feel silly.

When we dropped the newly rebuilt 390 into my truck, it was a different block because mine was already bored to .060. Well this block had a dipstick, which was fine, but my oil pan had one too. So we welded the pan hole shut and went with the block dipstick. With the pan off and the motor still on the engine hoist, we stuck the stick in and marked on it where the oil level should be, while it was sticking thru into the crank area. With the motor oiled up and in the truck, it shows exactly when full.
