fusible link

Ok, I'm having a problem- I just replaced the alternator in my 69 f100 after it quit charging and a test confirmed it was gone. Now it still isn't charging and I have narrowed it down to either the fusible link or the regulator. I think my fusible link is gone because one of my friends hooked up my battery the other day while I was underneath the truck working on my brakes and he hooked it up backwards, and i read on another forum that that could blow the fusible link. What i was wondering is if there is a source for replacement fusible links, or if it is a make-your-own proposition. Also, if they are available how safe would it be to just straight wire the wire and bypass the fusible link temporarily? I have to have something to get to work until monday, since i work the weekend shift.
second question- i jumped the truck off about three or four times yesterday with my 89 bonneville and now it isn't charging, is it possible that the extra load on its alternator killed it? I have jumped people off with it before many times with no problem, but never that many times in one day.

You can get universal fusible links at Advance auto. You have to know what size to use. If it runs at all I would not think it would be the fusible link. I would either have the voltage regulator checked or just replace it especially if you still have the old mechanical regulator. The solid state ones are way more reliable. Also make sure the regulator ground is good.

You may be right, I just know that something isn't right. It runs perfectly normal, it just isn't charging, and like I said, I think I have narrowed it down to those two causes. I'll probably replace the regulator anyway, right now I just need something that won't leave me stranded at work. lol.
