most if not all 7.3s will only have the hydro system which uses power steering fluid to build pressure in your hydro boost system which acts almost identical to a full hydraulic system. On a relic of a diesel (not in a bad way) like greys 85 yes they use vacuum but not very reliable or good at braking
Pardon me, I'm an antique at heart.
This is new info for me, makes a lot more sense, and no offence taken.
Ok sorry about the Hijack, like we said before go back check your master cylinder again, then check your electrical after replacing your cab youd be amazed at the electrial bugs that can pop up
This year truck has no belt driven vac pump, it has a electrical vac pump that to my understanding operates the ac /heater ducts. I switched the cab because the previous one was crushed on the side, you could still drive it but the doors were caved. But the brakes worked at this point. There is nothing electrical to operate the brakes, only electrical is brake light switch and sensors? I bled the s$&% out of them with my wife ,just like the old 71 blazer! Could it be that new brake booster I bought from O'reilly's? I guess made in china. The master cylinder how to check that?
The brakes on the 99 and up diesels use the power steering pump to run the hydro booster for the brakes. Pre 99 used a belt driven vacuum pump. There's no electric pump on this system. If the truck shuts down, you have one, maybe two power assisted stops.
The hard pedal sounds like you got a bad booster unit. Did you have to add fluid to the power steering pump when you replaced the booster? If so, did you put power steering fluid or ATF in? Our trucks require ATF in the pump. Regular power steering fluid might mess things up like this.
Thanks guys for the infor, after testing it appears to be the booster. Took it off and bought a new one. Gonna wait and put it on in the morning, its 102f out here right now!
Thanks Tag 187, your copy of the service manual on testing the hydro boost exposed A rebuilt hydro boost I had bought at Oreilly's to be bad when I bought it! So they gave me another and she works! THANKS TO ALL!!!!!
Did you replace any calipers? If you did and set them up the wrong way like the bleeders are facing down instead of up you wouldnt be able to get the air out of the system. You can on the superduties mix the rear calipers by hooking them up backwards putting the bleeders downwards. Just tryin to help with this one, Sounds like you have a bad booster but they ussually dont fail to often.
