In the mornings when I start my truck the exhaust smells like burning oil. I would be ok with a rich diesel smell but burning oil concerns me. Do I have a concern or is this normal?
The truck has 112k.
There is no smoke (if there is I can't see it).
The smell goes away as soon as the truck nears normal operating temperature.
The temps have been 40's to teens and it does not seem to matter.
It is, it is probably burning or unburning fuel oil. Until diesel get hot, it will smell. If it motor oil, it should be smoking a gray or blue smoke. Try cycling your glow plugs a couple of times and see if it clears up.
Keep an eye on your oil level. If your loosing a bit more than normal, you might have an injector oring rolled or something along injector lines. Just sayin.
I've noticed the same thing every winter and Barry hit it, until the motors warms up you'll smell that hard unburnt diesel smell, almost seems like it running rich, burning of the eyes rich. Keep an eye on the smoke output like the guys mentioned and oil levels and you should be fine.
