Edge Filter ????

What is an edge filter and where is it?

It's located in the HPOP. It's the square piece.

The 1/4" square x 1 1/4" long w/two slots is the edge filter for the 94-95 if my research is correct. The 96-97 had the edge filter mounted on the end of the IPR....

I am trying to figure why the simple removal of the edge filter plug/or galley plug and replacement with new o-ring caused the pump to quit working...Will not make pressure...
The truck ran fine until I removed the plug to replace the failed O-ring and now it will not run!

Have tried several IPR's and checked the reservoir...Pushes oil through but will not build pressure...

Oil was changed 3 days before the o-ring change. It was changed the same day I replaced the two eng plugs in the heads with the newer version...Started after they were replaced with no problems...Can't see any difference between removing them and allowing air into the galley and removing and replacing a simple plug.
I hate to buy another reman'd pump when this one is less than a year old... Has me extremely frustrated and the local diesel mechanic stumped.

The 96-97 had the edge filter mounted on the end of the IPR....

The early model has the edge filter in the IPR,,96 97 has it in the pump....

ACTION:

You are correct...I red it backwards.....
Old Age getting to me...

Still a mystery as to why the pump quit with only a plug removal and replacement.

A diesel mechanic friend believes that it is just a fluke but the pump failed....

Now I know what is correct so I can order a different one.

So the picture above is for a 96-97 through 03??

Not that I have found

Is there supposed to be one? If so, is held in by the plug and how woud the oil get to the IPR since it would be above the opening to the IPR.

That was why I was asking for exploded diagrams of the HPOP earlier...but the only views I ever got were ones with the 1/4 x 1/4 x 1 1/4 w/slots edge filter.

I ordered a new pump...gave up trying to get accurate info/photos onthe pump that was sent last year for a 96-97.
Apparently the wrong pump was sent. The pump I took off was the correct one but it was not pumping up to spec so I replaced it.
The 94-95 pump that was sent worked well until the plug O-ring ruptured and I replaced the o-ring.

The ford mechanic had no idea about the innards of these pumps...Like most mechanical things, I get farther into them than 99.9% of everybody else.

The ball needs to go back in or the truck won't start. It is VERY IMPORTANT. There was nothing wrong with the pump in the pictures.

To the original poster.... that is not the drain to the IPR, it's the inlet.

The duty cycle needs checked. That is the only way we can diagnose what's going on. Once we know that, we can go further.

My bet is a bad IPR or a stuck injector poppet.

so what you are saying is that there is a small steel ball that is held in by the prong onthe plug?

Cuda's post leads me to think that the 1/4x1/4x1 1/4 edge filter shown above holds this ball in...
I assume that is not the case...
Is the ball the same diameter as the bore?

I have a new HPOP on the shelf, I'll take it apart for more picts if you don't understand where the ball is located.

This picture below is looking down the IPR hole. The rod crossing at the bottom of the hole is the same rod/plug you see in the picture above with the edge filter. At the very bottom of the hole is the ball, The dark/rusty looking thing. It is being held in place by the rod too. IIRC the ball can fall out of the edge filter hole.

Thanks for the picture Cuda. Wish I had this before I ordered a new pump....
I never found any small steel ball and I used a magnet to look for it.
I would have to take the pump off again to rectify the problem. Might as well put the new pump on and be done with it.
Guess I can figure out what size ball and have a spare pump even though it appears that it is the wrong pump.
Again..Thanks for all the info.
I did learn some more about my PSD.
Also learned you can't trust people to pull te correct item off the shelf. From al outward appearances, both look identical...ecept for one small item on the mounting side and then you have to look close.
Expensive lesson.
