sluggish steering

My '95 3.0 has lost some responsiveness and is pretty sluggish lately....I've never flushed the pump or changed the filter.
Is this the most likely problem?
I know it's the steering system, but wanted to try and start with a basic flush/filter before buying a new pump, etc.
With 244K I hope flushing isn't too little too late.....
Thanx

Any other high mileage rangers out there that have or had this problem?

Welcome to FTE.

P/S fluid wears out too, it's one of the forgotten fluids & one of my maintenance pet peeves !!!!

If the P/S fluid has never been changed I'd start with a flush & refill with new fluid.

Then if you get a positive response maybe consider adding a half can of Seafoam TransTune & drive it some while watching the fluids color, & for signs of debris in the fluid.

If it stops acting out, flush it again using the other half can of Seafoam TransTune & more new fluid.

This is what I did on my 99 Ranger & 94 Taurus P/S system when they began to act up with off center "shudder".
It's been years now & both systems are fine & the Taurus P/S pump whine is nearly gone as a side benifit!!!!

I just bought a "Magnifine" 25 micron inline filter to add to both systems return line, to filter debris & maybe help keep them healthy a little longer.
So I agree with your idea to add a P/S filter & it would probably be a good idea with the mileage & vintage of your system.

If you have to replace the P/S pump, maybe consider also replacing the hoses too & definately add a filter.

Just some happenings & thoughts for pondering.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanx for the greeting and the response!
I think I'm gonna go ahead and do it this weekend. I've had many vehicles(incl. 2 previous rangers) and always performed regular maintenance, but I've never had to work on power steering issues...
It's likely I'll be moving to either cali. or arizona within the next few months and I'm probably going to be driving the ranger. I just want to keep up on this thing so that I can drive it out without any issues as well as hold on to it as long as possible.
It's paid for and still runs great- and gets pretty decent mileage.
I just sacrificed my '01 cobra and have been driving the ranger now for about 9 months...It was my wifes truck and we got it in '02 with 63K on it.
It's been good transportation.
Anyway, thanx again and I'll report back sometime this weekend...
