Power steering issue

I just replaced my power steering pump because it felt very sluggish while turning if i was at a stand still but driving while turning is nice and smooth

Is it suppose to be hard to turn the wheel when your not moving or am i looking at doing a power steering flush my buddy said its a 1 ton truck not a Cadillac blah blah but shouldnt you be able to turn that wheel all the way back and fourth with out any hesitations

Any ideas would be much appreciated thanks

When replacing the pump it's advised to flush the system......why run dirty oil through a new pump? Right?

You should be able to turn the wheel while standing still, but it's something i always try to avoid because of the extra stress it produces.

Is your wheel jerking a bit while you turn it?

keep your foot off the brake pedal when you are testing. The brakes operate with power steering pump pressure. Also when at a standstill, when you attempt to turn, the front wheels must rotate slightly. They cant do that with the brakes applied. Hope this helps.

My question is why would you need to turn the wheels back and forth while at a stand still? I know with my bigger 285's it is not a simple task, and as mentioned above turning the wheels while at a stop just seems like a lot of front end stress to me. I just repalced my steering gear with a Red Head unit and love it. Its a much tighter steer now, but still don't have any reason to turn without rolling.

I also agree that a new pump deserves some new fluid, so I would flush it.

Sowaxemen I have the same issue as the OP. I had a hell of a time backing my toy hauler into my driveway this past weekend. Not an easy task on 37's even with the brake not applied. Otherwise I agree with you, no need for multiple wheel turns while not in motion.

Powerstroke73 I would consider the Red Head steering pump, I've heard nothing but good reviews on it and the company.

It should be ATF, not power steering fluid.

The Mobil 1 is fine, or a Mercon V.

Flush the power steering fluid with ATF before you pull the trigger on a new pump. Use Mercon V as stated above. And as an added measure see if you can flush out the steering pump fluid cooler located near the bottom of the radiator on the driver's side.

Edit: Mobil 1 Synthetic will work too. The main benefit to synthetic is it tolerates more heat before it will brake down.

My post was not a recommendation, merely meant to inform someone that might not know. Does not apply to those who already know everything.

Oh boy this thread is about to take a ....TURN...for the worst. Haha kidding.
Puller I think its safe to say most of us are on a constant learning curve with these trucks. Some learn by asking questions in the middle of a thread and others try to help out. I thought I knew everything (HA..not even remotely close) until I learned not to back in a trailer on big tires whilst turning the wheel at a stand still. The OP learned (hopefully not to use power steering fluid in....well a power steering pump, who knew. I bought the wrong fluid the first week I owned my truck not knowing to use ATF. We're all friends here tryin to help each other out.
