Black Antifreeze
In the mean time, I have some soot to remove from my cooling system. Any ideas about what to use to flush it out? I added a coolant filter kit yesterday and tried flushing the degas bottle with water and no luck.
When I get the EGR cooler deleted, I'll let you know how it's doing.
I pulled the EGR cooler (whew! that's a lot of work!). The chambers where the exhaust flows through are dry. I also pulled the EGR Valve and it was dry. Now, I am confused. I expected to find wet soot in the exhaust portions of the cooler and on the EGR valve. I do not have a good but simple way to pressure test the EGR cooler. So, I think I'll carry it to a diesel mechanic to be tested.
I am curious about the intake. Where the exhaust and the coolant enter the intake are very close. Could there there be a crack? If there is a crack in the intake, this may explain why I'm getting soot in the coolant since the intake will have the boost pressure from the turbo, which will be higher than the 16lbs water pressure. But how do I check the intake? Any suggestions?
BTW, the intake ports look like exhaust ports. Carbon & oil. The carbon is form the EGR system and oil is from the CCV system. I think I'll reroute the CCV system while I have it torn apart.
I think I discoverd the source of the strange oder I've been smelling. The last dealer mechanic to work on the truck (when the EGR cooler was replacved in January '08) somehow dropped one of the plastic retainers for the wiring harness onto the EGR cooler. It was mostly melted. That's some pretty tough plastic!
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
