speedometer gone crazy

Got a question for a tech or guy that knows speedometers. My wifes rig is a 96 windstar, the speedo reads very irratic. Most of the time it jumps to a higher reading and never drops below actual speed. The odometer seems to be working but 60 mph sometimes reads 90+. My understanding is these are magnetic drive interally. What are my options. I'm not afraid to tackle this but want to gather some info first, so any tips would be helpful. Thanks Wishbone

Does it have a mechanical or electronic odometer?
