I have just shy of 5k on my 2015 3.5 eco. and plan to change oil at that point. Did the engine scan and it still says I have 50% oil life left. Do you go by the odometer or the computer?
I've never seen a post telling me that changing oil too often can damage the vehicle. If you want to change it at 5,000 miles, that's entirely up to you. The newer, longer intervals are based on:
1) the newer oils last much longer, and
2) changing oil less often means less oil to be disposed of.
Personally, I would go by the computer, especially if your driving is mostly highway. If it's mostly city/ short-trip driving and/ or lots of towing, you might want to consider a more conservative oil-change schedule.
While I agree that it is probable that going by the computer on the vehicle will be fine, I worry about the turbos. Given that I plan to change at about the 50% point, and will use Mobil 1 fully synthetic when I change.
Ok. Thanks. I have a fairly decent shop so will be doing the every-other oil changes. But, it just occurred to me that if the dealership doesn't have Mobil 1 I probably shouldn't put it in as I obviously don't want to be changing brands every time. I'd better check…
I also go by the computer. I've been getting my oil changed around 7,000 miles, give or take some. I have 80,000 miles, with a fair number of towing miles, all is good so far. I purchased an oil change package when I bought my truck. In order to get the oil change the OLM has to be at less than 30% life to get the oil change. The dealer did my first oil change for free & did not reset the OLM, that gave me two oil changes in the first 7K.
