Sons 94 ranger 4.0 4x4 Auto 185k got him to work yesterday but would not start to bring him home. No spark, checked with timing light, and no fuel pressure.
Searched and read alot of tips from Pawpaw so I tried a few things with no luck. Swapped the relays around, inspected coil pack and plugs. CEL was not on and goes out while cranking. I have a OBD scan tool but this truck must be to old or I need help finding plug. Crank sensor maybe? Thanks for any help you can offer.
With No spark & No fuel pressure, makes me want to ask if you swapped the PCM power relay out with a known good one, like the A/C power relay???
The 94 is OBD-1 & its DLC is under hood. However you can use a jumper in the DLC to cause the vehicle CEL to blink any codes, if your scantool won't fit the DLC, or scan OBD-1.
Thanks for quick reply! Yes Relay from WOT/ A/C swapped did nothing. Just got truck home and will push in shop tomorrow for further work. Will post what I find.
OK good feedback. You can also jumper the fuel pump at the DLC to see if it'll run.
Right now without more clues, with no fuel pump, or spark, its sounding like the PCM, or firewall electrical connections to it belong on the suspect list. Make sure its firewall electrical connector is plugged in tight.
There have been reports of windshield water leaks on the passenger side getting into the computer & mucking things up, so if it was wet that day, put that on the suspect list & if its wet up behind the glove box where the computer lives, put it high up on the suspect list.
If the CEL comes on when you turn the key one click, but the fuel pump does'nt run for 2 seconds give the gas tank a whack & try again.
If theres no change do as pawpaw suggested, turn the key one click & ground the fuel pin on the EEC 4 test connector & with the key on the fuel pump should run.
Pulled truck in and rotated the relays again. Check fuel pump, it ran 2 sec. and stopped. Cranked it and it fired up! Going to throw 2 new relays at it and give it some road time. Not extremely confidant, but this little ranger has been through alot and does not travel on long trips. Thanks to all who helped.
Ok, good feedback on the relay swap seeming to wake things up. Don't be surprised if new relays put the fix on the problem, as power relays of that era are a known problem part. When you install the new relays, check their socket contacts for corrosion, or looseness. There have been a few reports of socket corrosion causing mischief.
