It's not that delicate. Just flush it out with some brake cleaner and blow out the opening on the bottom. If it's stopped up too bad, it may need to be replaced. I just recleaned the soot from mine recently. After cleaning, it looked brand new inside.

You can run it without the sensor or tube and you might see a small difference in performance. It wont hurt the truck one bit to run without it. It is used in the fueling tables, but without it, the difference is small. So run it with the big hole in it until you get the new tube installed. Your sensor should be fine.
whenever cleaning a sensor..always make sure the electrical end is dry before you plug it in...its always' wise after cleaning the sensor to clean the electrical end with electrical cleaner in a spray can..its made for sensors..it is also fast drying..then dab some electrical grease in the plug before you plug it in..the cleaner will both chase out the brake clean or water and it cleans the plug end..the grease will keep a good connection as well as keep moisture out...both can be found at most any parts store...i do this on every plug i take apart on my truck..even if its under the dash..my gauges even have a dab of grease on them...windshields tends to collect moisture and the warm gauges are right next to it...
