Anybody build your own exhaust? I know plenty of you on here have but where do you get the material? I can get elbows and short pipe at AZ but not enough to do it right and the local muffler shops don't watn to sell pipe outright, they want to do it for you. I want a dual set-up on my 351 to exit either in front of or right behind the rear tires. Any help? Thanks.
I found a little performance/accessories shop near me that would bring in aftermarket exhaust parts, brands like Magnaflow and Dynomax and others produce U and J bends in various size tubing that can be ordered like anything else.
I built a complete 2.5" mendrel bent system for my truck with over the counter parts and a short length of 3" tubing I sourced from a friendly muffler shop. It was all cut and welded together by yours truely.

Why not enough? Those pieces are what I used to make my own on my 80. I had long tube headers, so it took a elbow attached to each header collector, and a short straight section on each side afterward to bring it out under each frame rail. I did slice a pie section on each side to 45 the pipe up after the frame and then welded it back.
One more 90 on each side, then a muffler on each side, then one more straight section on each side, and then one 45 on each side to turn it to the outside and down in front of the rear wheels.
If you have a mig welder it makes a nicer looking job. I was able to spot the pie cut I made back together with my arc welder, but I used clamps on everything else. You can see part of it hanging down when I was working on the frame in this picture.
FENCEPIPE! my f150 has fence pipe for the straight parts of the exhaust (basically everything but the y-pipe) It's thicker and can withstand abuse that aluminized pipe cant. plus galvanization is a tougher application and looks good burnt (brownish from hot exhaust)

being a redneck kicks a$s
I have thought about using chain link fence pipe myself, but I have never gotten over to measure the od and the id of the pipe. I was afraid it might work out to some odd size that would not fit a standard muffler. What size did it work out to?
Also, you have to be careful welding it(just like the autoparts store pipe) because it's galvanized and the fumes can make you sick.
Thanks for the help guys, yep I've got a MIG and now I have the bed off my truck so I can really see what I need for the exhaust. Never thought of the fence pipe though, I've got some laying around so I'll measure it and let ya'll know what size it is. Is there a problem with soot and crap getting all over the rear wheels if the exhaust exits in front of them?
or you could try electrical conduit. i'm and electrician i used to make Demo Car Zoomies out of it. all mandrel bends too.. just remember its all I.D so 2" is 2" ID. its just a bit on the thin side in the walls
acctually the cheapest fence pipe is 2.5" and my summit glasspack fit right on it, measured even all the way. yes, clean the galvanization off or be in a WELL ventelated area, i havent puked from it my bud went home almost dead from puking.
and yes, I will be doing my dual exhaust with fence pipe, leave aluminized it for the racers

So the chain link fence pipe at Lowe's might be 2.5" OD? Sounds perfect doesn't it? The only thing you might need besides that is one of those things that swells the end of the pipe. I guess you could try to butt weld it too, though you would have to do that out of the truck to get a good leak free job(I would anyway).

Never had a problem with that. I always make sure the exhaust is past the side of the body a little bit. If it exits underneath, you get that loud drone inside the cab, and I can't stand that very long.
