For an equalizer pipe, spray the first few feet of your exaust with spray paint... fire the truck up and drive it around till she warms up, then lay into the throttle for a bit. Taker home and put you H or X pipe where the paint stopped melting off... This works best when the engine is in tune... aka if it is rich or lean the exaust temp will be alot different. Myself, im opting for fenderwell exit long tubes to 2 1/2" pipe, then 3 1/2"stacks with 24" glasspacks. Would go straight pipe but i think it might be a bit unbearable in the cab.
I've heard of that too, never tried yet. Although I always wondered what kind of paint should be used. Type, color even? Obviously high heat paint may not be wise.
I like the H pipe idea-another job to do. I hear it controls "blatting" of exhaust.
You could get fancy and make an X pipe! hehe
Stacks, cool Hairyboxnoogle...........I was gonna have stacks, but then decided I didn't want to bore holes in my bed or run them outside of the cab either ...........besides being unbearable in the cab, straightpipes would get you Loads of tickets too ......not good
I have a flareside so they will run right behind the cab no drilling/cutting/boring necessary. And yea, youre prolly right the way i drive... lots of tickets.
What do you all think about headers? I am planning on getting duals and am wondering what brand(s) would give me the best performance, smog not being an issue in Oklahoma where I just moved. I have a 77' 4x4 with a 351 windsor, 4 spd tranny. Am looking for a smooth sound but doesn't have to be particularly quiet. Any ideas?
Hmm, well not for sure, but good odds that headers for a 302 will fit it. The 351 has a little taller deck which makes the motor a little wider, but like i said 302 headers should fit, especially if you get shorties.

hedman hedders are a good buy. cheap, well built, easy to install, they come with all hardware needed. cant go wrong lol.
I feel kinda lost with all the different styles they sell. Do the hi-temp coatings make a difference? Are they worth the money? Im not one for spending too much to make things look nice, i am more concerned with how it performs. I will be towing some so torque is my primary concern. Im thinking of glass packs, or maybe the flomaster.
for tourqe you want full length or tri Y headers. the coating is supposed to help, i always figure just get painted headers and wrap them in heat wrap, you will still come out ahead and will have whatever gains you would have had with the coating. also, for performance, glasspacks arent the best, because almost all have louvered baffles, which will mess up your flow. chambered mufflers flow well, straight through designs are king though. magnaflow, dyno max, hooker max flow, thrush glasspacks, are all straight through designs. i have had really good luck with hooker areo mufflers. they claim they boost up to five ft pounds of tourqe over straight pipes. i just have the seat of pants dyno, but they make a difference, and sound way mean.

Since you'll want torque at idle, get a pair of headers with a very thick flange(to prevent heat warping/leaks) and a small to average tube size.
Not 1.5" primarys
Something closer to 1".
Get long tube.
Ceramic high heat coatings are a good thing to keep heat out the engine compartment, but I wouldn't waste my money on them.
I've seen them flake off pretty easy after dinging the headers, and rusting over time.
You could get a regualr pair and sent them off to be coated by jetcoatings (I don't remember the name exactly I'm tired), or put heat wrap on them and get the same thing accomplished for cheaper, and more than likely longer lasting.
Thats the kind of advice I was looking for! Thanks guys. I'll have to do some more research on what i do with the rest of the exhaust past the headers.
Well its not looking good, I have called a few companies and am getting the impression that I wont be able to put headers in this truck. One shop I called seemed to think that headers aren't available because the 351 winsor in my truck isn't the original setup. Any ideas?
go to summit or jegs, and look up engine swap headers... and like i said, 302 headers will work... all but the same head, bigger head bolts and valves, that all, and only about an inch wider, you should be fine.
