doing the driveshaft u joints and having some problems getting it out. i got the clips off and now i just cant get the joint off. ive tried using a vise, hammer and chisel, lots of PB blaster. nothing. any help would be great. never done U joints before.
They sell a U-joint press at Harbor Freight for around $40. They look like an overgrown C-clamp with some accesories. They work best clamped in a vice and turned with an impact wrench. Or if your vice is big enough you can use a large socket that is bigger than the U-joint cap and then one a little smaller than the cap and put one socket on either side of the joint and use the little one to press it into the larger one. Good luck.

If you have a heavy duty enough vise, get a large shot filled soft face hammer and put the yoke of the driveshaft on top of the vise jaws, do not clamp the shaft or the yoke tight just adjust the vise jaws so the yoke sits on top of the jaws, and hammer on the shaft near the yoke with the large soft face hammer. This method once learned works slicker than snot, I have been using it for years wouldn't do it any other way.
If you have a disc cutter and can get at it cut thru the cross and get it out of the way and then just hammer the caps out. Press new in with vice as described.
Been there done that , took the shaft down to my mechanic and they pressed em out and put the new ones in , think they charged all of 30 bucks to do it , was well worth it
But then you need a new center section for the U-joint.
The caps press through the shaft eyelets, you need to press 1 side in so it pushes the other side out, and then press it back the other way to remove the second cap. This will require a big vise and sockets or the U-joint press.
I have had to cut them out before but after 20 plus years of rust built up around it... what can you expect? You actually can get them out without a vise or press. Rest one side of the shaft over a piece of thick wall pipe or a socket, be sure it's big enough for the cap to fall into. On the the otherside use a big punch or an impact socket (small enough to fit inside the eyelet) and drive the caps out with a big hammer. I know I have done this on on the tailgate of my truck after I shredded a u-joint in the middle of the boonies... not fun.
