Cadillac 429
Is this Cadillac a 1964, or a 1963, or? Both years are very similar in appearance. I've owned one of each year.
What year izit? The first two digits of the VIN is the year: 64 = 1964 / 63 = 1963.
The Jet-Away was first offered in 1956 as standard equipment on Cadillac's and Olds 98's, optional on Olds 88's and Pontiacs.
These three cars were the only GM cars to use it. Some GMC trucks also used it from 1957 thru 1963.
Does your 1956 Pontiac or Olds 88 have Jet-Away? If it has a P in the quadrant is does.
The single range 4 speed Hydra-Matic used 1940/51 and the dual range Hydra-Matic used from 1951/56 does not have a P in the shift quadrant.
When parked (engine off) with either of these early Hydro's, put the car in R = reverse...it won't roll...guaranteed.
btw: In 1953, GM's Hydra-Matic factory burned down, so some Cadillac's and Olds' used Buicks Dyna-Flow, which has P in the quadrant. Pontiac's used Chevy's Power-Glide.
The Stuart M3 Light Tank of WWII tank used two Cadillac 346 cid flathead V8's and Hydra-Matic.
1940 Olds = the first car to have a fully automatic transmission: Single range 4 speed Hydra-Matic.
A consumate car buff since (almost) day one, my family once owned Caddy and Olds dealerships, where I learned all this scheiss.
