LOL... I think you and my NAPA guy have the same spot. Couple others told me to just burn it in my next bon fire. Just want to do my little part in this big world of ours.
We do have recycling centers here but none take it.
After 10min on the phone I did find a special place that charges .95 a gallon. They send it to Jacksonville to refine it. So I'll take that and my neighbor's 55gal drum of old oil.
In Austin we have a hazardous waste facility. I bring carburetor cleaner, antifreeze, car batteries etc there. I usually just take motor oil to Advance because it's right down the street.
Check with your waste management department for your local area. Here, we've got a "hazohouse" that's open on the weekends, that will take pretty much ANY sort of hazardous material (paint, chemicals, bad gas, antifreeze, etc.), and they do so for free. Maybe your transfer station, or dump, or landfill, or whatever you call it, will have one.
aoutozone takes oil an coolant, also if you have a valvoline center not sure they all do but the one near me does and its free. find some where that does the flushing n they might take it. When I was younger and worked in a garage they sold waste oil and coolant to a company who refined it.
Phone around, places that do coolant flushes usually "recycle" coolant. I worked at an oil change place briefly and they would do flushes, collect a 45 gallon drum of coolant, then filter it with a pump. Then they would replenish the additives after some tests(probably glycol and some anti-corrosion stuff) then re-container it and sell it as recycled premix coolant-at a lower price of course. (the guy who did this was curiously vague tho, heh. The fluid looked fine after, but who knows what else could be in it)
Just don't dump it in the oil recycler containers, the guys who run them will freak out, because coolant will ruin the oil.
The same shop used to make their own bug juice, just water and some isopropyl alcohol, and dye to color it.
...normally I have a secret hiding place under a loose piece of concrete.
I'm an engineer for the state environmental agency. So I can't and wouldn't ever dump hazardous materials into the environment. With that said, our state offers assistance to local governments for "household hazardous waste" collection events and fixed locations. Most every state, and local government in each state, has similar events and locations. Additionally, the local AutoZones and Advance Auto Parts stores offer collection. Typically the governement sponsored fixed locations and events are at no charge to the public. If your local stores don't offer collection, call your county/city government office and just ask.
