Hey guys i just picked up a 1976 F150 Custome with a 360 4 speed 4x4. I'm not sure all the details yet but I'm getting excited and want to start planning the build. I will be daily driving it for a few months and then it will turn in to my wheelin rig. My question to you is... do I build the 360 or should i go for a 460 swap for a wheeling rig? More power it better but cheaper is better too!
Well my buddy has a .... 350(eww) built up .. i just want to be able to walk all over him haha! those chebby guys talk alot of smack... But i'm more worried about reliabilty and what not or the rest of the drive train as well.
Your 360 block is the same as a 390, will accept 390 crankshaft, pistons and rods. If you want more you can get a stroker kit from Survival Motorsports that will make 445 cubic inches with your block at .030 over. Not as big as a 460 but kinda cool.
What do you think would be the not "cheaper" but less expensive with a better outcome? If you get what I am saying. Like would it better/cheaper to build the 360 then to swap in a 460? I guess more horses the better, but I'd rather have a better built motor for a lesser cost ha!
Go with the 460. Its a little newer engine and L&L makes everything you need for the swap. I have a 390 in my 64 and i was running 38.5 swampers with 4.10 gears. It runs good but nothing like my 75' cc with a 460 and 39.5 IROKS, and that truck is 2k heavier. We had a mudbog yesterday and I had no problem running in 2nd and high range. The 460 will cost a bit more but I think its worth it. I wish I would have put one in my 64 instead of the 390.
if you want power then punch out that little 360 to a 428 and get the crank and rods from eagle with a good cam and an edelbrock carb and manifold itll eat a 460 alive
I'd go with the good ol' 360, punch it out with 390 hardware. Give it a good headjob, aluminum intake, bump up compression. Those old FE's a a very strong engine
460.460 Yup did you here me. Get that 460 under the hood. On second thought thought bore that 460 out to 514. Watch the bowties eat your dust. Shut them up for good. 460 is a great motor. The best truck motor around by far. An the performance is outstanding. Put a nice dual exhaust on there an then when your on the road an if you see that that guy that talks smack about your Ford. Hammer down an pass him let that exhaust sing in his ear. Ford power baby all the way. Good Luck on your truck build.
Stock C6 I imagine would be fine, same tranny from the 460. You will probably need a new bell housing for the transmission (so it'll mate to the engine). The niner should hold up, but if you want a solid rig I would put in some decent dana's and an NP205 transfer case.
well i found out it has a 4wd part time... is this a NP205? And currently is has the 4spd tranny... does the 460/c6 driveline fit pretty decent? or do you have to make tranny mounts and new drive shafts? I know about the engine mount obviously.
