Everything depends on how extreme of a wheelin rig you want. What you tend to use it for, mud, rockcrawlin, your driving habbits, are you one of those guys with a heavy right foot? Do you try to do 4-wheel burnouts? Thats what is going to decide what drivetrain will hold up. The other day at the mudbogs there was a 79 1/2 ton with 44s and a 460 and he did just fine. For me personaly I like overkill, Im not happy unless I have 1 ton running gear. lol
Alright new question... I found a 460 complete with a c6 trany but he thinks it was out of a 2wd truck, is the c6 going to work? Will the transfer case bolt up?
So I would be better off just finding a c6 tranny from a 4x4.. does it have to have a 460 in front of it? or will any motor work? Also is there a kit or relocation bracket for the tranny mount?
hey, if your going to go 460 i would honestly keep that NP435. the toughest manual out there IMO. thats what i got in my high boy and all it sees is abuse.
unless you go crazy with a 460 build that 9" will hold unless ur doing burnies with wheel hopp. there good rears and will handle a stock 460 unless ur doing dumb stuff like i said.
as far as the 360/390, you can build them do be damn good motors. i would accualy perfer a true built 390 in my truck over a 460. but there both good motors so you can really do what ever you want.
like i said, i can get a 460 for you. its just a phone call away. let me know

ohh ya my high boy is sitting in my mudd pit as we speak, haha.
the only trannys that will fit up to a 460 is the 351/400M 429 and of course the 460. "there might be another but i cant remember" just save urself the time and get the 4x4 tranny.
again just my .02 cents.

mitch - I found a 460 and 2wd tranny complete motor for 350 bucks, is that a good deal? If so can you find me a c6 4x4 tranny? Other wise is your motor complete or just the block? Thanks bud!
I'd like to get rid of the NP435 and swap in an auto, i think it's better for my drivin style
350 bux is not a bad deal at all if you know the tranny and motor works. with the c-6's i dont know if you can just change out the tail shaft and get the t-case to bolt up, but if i remember right i think you have to change the tailshaft?
ummmmmm i can call my parts guy and see if he has a c-6 for you. im going to say no but he might be able to get one.
dont get me wrong the c-6 is a good tranny. better then the powerstrokes e4od ya remember them POS's haha.
ill go talk to the guy. need to drop off his plates anyways.
ill let you know.

Easiest to find a 4wd trans-as long as it works. The factory 460 trans do usually have one extra clutch in the clutch pack-I think, plus a different vacuum modulator and rod.
Also find a 460 truck kickdown rod! I think the 2wd kickdown will work.
Using a 351m/400 C6 will work fine-just make sure you get the trans to transfer case adapter for the Np205-it should be iron, and have a notch for the shift lever assembly-and the standard Ford 6 bolt pattern-which I believe is the same from the 70's to the late 80's, and the same spline count-31. Hehe, the Chevy guys don't have it so easy with the spline count. The 4wd trans will have a deeper sump pan too, which is a bonus.
I bought a parts 78' parts bronco that had a rebuilt C6/Np205, and its working great in my F250. I do recommend finding the correct vac. modulator and rod from a big block-it will allow the trans. to build more pressure, and less chance of slippage=longer life, plus add a trans cooler, even more insurance of long life.
I too had a 4spd-divorced though, it was worn out thats why I went auto-but I didn't want to try and set up the factory column shift, so I put in an aftermarket shifter w. cable-way easy.
You could just mate the 460 to the bulletproof 4spd and not worry about driveshafts too-alot of variables to consider.
Some food for thought!
This may sound noobish... what does it mean when a transfer case is divorced, did the trannsmission kick it out? i hope the transfercase gets to keep the dog haha! but seriously? i r confused
i might sudjest keeping the 360, until you find a 460.... then build or what ever you want the 460, then swap out... that away, theres only a little bit of time where the truck isnt driveable, if its your only source of transportation...

That means the transfer case is not bolted to the transmission, it's separate (uses three total driveshafts).

For $350, I would buy it. Take the C-6 to a good transmission shop and have them rebuilt to tow (they'll use heavier duty components) and they can also make sure it'll be compatible with the transfer case.

Hmmm... I assume the Diesel E4OD is the same as the 460 E4OD... as in the one in your sig... from what I hear they're damn good transmissions. I'll be putting one behind my 460.
fwhen you build them they can be OK. but a stock e40d....... mehh not sitting very high in my book. they just wont handle the tourqe from the diesel for that long. they can be lets say very bit**Y.
