you probably have 3 pratical choices if you want to go the stock/boneyard route.

you can use the T5 from a 302 mustang, an AOD or even the c4 if overdrive is not an issue.

the T5 can be converted to bring the shifter farther forward. i think they use the tailhousing from a S10 truck as this places the shifter farther forward. there are also kits out there to modify/convert the T5 shifter location to where you want it.

the AOD is another popular choice. the biggest issue is making sure you get the tv cable installed and operating properly. Lokar makes a cable kit just for this application (aassuming you are using a carb, if efi, then the AODE transmission is the one to use along with correct computer)

the C4 is a tried and true transmission. very straight forward and easy to install. no overdrive is only negative, but virtually bullet proof with a good rebuild.

of course there is also the vast aftermarket for just about any tranny you want, from heavy duty T5's and there newer versions, 6 speeds, bullet proof AOD's (very expensive) to just about any combo of C4 or C6 transmission type you want.

good luck

Rgds
Mike

Howdy,

I think you would be happy with an automatic. If you do an automatic. You should go to an AOD since you'll get a pretty tall over drive which will make your truck a pleasure to drive on the highway.

If you want to tow something with it you could consider an E4OD. It's a pretty strong trans. (I'm putting one in my 55 F-600....pics in my gallery.)

Cheers,

Rick

I vote for the 70's 3 speed manual with a floor shift conversion, if you have a 3.25 rear gear. My '74 f100 had that combo and it was a blast! Then again, back then gas didn't cost a whole lot.

I just picked up a 4R70W today. I got tired of changing gears. Now I just need to order my wiring harness and computer control.

I guess a clutch-only would be one step down from the in/out box.

4R70W huh? That ought to work. Good luck & Happy Motoring!

Still think I am going to go with a manual trans. Have considered the AOD but really like runnng through the gears of my current 3 on the tree with no OD. Gotta figure a 5 speed will be even more fun!!!

Mike you by chance have a company that offers the kit to modify/convert the T5 shifter?

Thanks to all for the help.

I have a T5 in my 302 powered 55 F100, no problems with the std location of the shifter. I did fit a Pro 5.0 short throw shifter linkage though and then just made up a shifter, with a bend round the seat front, works ace.

T 5 and more and more and more:

Modern Driveline - T5 / TREMEC TKO Transmission Conversion - Swap your Ford Mustang, Falcon, Cobra, Hotrod into Overdrive! Performance Parts

They have had used trans for sale in the past, but none showing the last few times I checked.

i saw that and the reason I replied is because no one said it in this thread and this thread shows as one of the top results if you google search “manual transmission options for 302 Windsor”
