I bought my '78 f100 about 2 years ago now. PO done some "crafty" work to and I was told the original motor which was a 351m was changed to a 302. I did not believe it was a 302 and had a few mechanics look at is and was still told it was a 302. Well I had an oiling problem and so instead of rebuilding the motor that was in it, I bought a used 302 to put in the truck and was going to get the college to put it in. Both motors is out and the motor that was in the truck is not a 302, its wider then the 302 and the distributor also will not fit in the 302. Is the old motor really a 351m and how would I tell.
The 302 is a '68 motor and i need a distributor but don't know if I need a 1 vac. version or a 2 vac. version. Does anyone know anything about these old engines?
Sounds like one of the engines might be a 351Winsor .302 and 351w dist. are not the same. If i am understanding what you think you have and what you are trying to do.
i will post pictures tomorrow of both engines. any certain parts do i need to take pictures of? Also, do i need the steel gear driven distributor or the iron gear?
motor on the left was the one that was in the truck when i bought it. the intake is about 2 inches wider than the second motor on the right. i was told the one on right was a 302 by the seller. help me id these engines.
Well number of valve cover bolts for one. 335 Series Engines (351C and 351M/400) have dry intake manifolds as the thermostat housing bolts directly to the block like in this pic:
how can you tell? what is it you see that tells you its a 351w and not a 351c or 351m?
The thermostat housing bolts to your intake manifold, it bolts to the block on 351c and 351M. I can tell by the shape of the valve covers and other items as well. Counting valve cover bolts works too but I can ID them at first glance and don't have to go that far. I don't even bother remembering which engines have how many valve cover bolts, that info isn't useful to me.
i did not know that, so i guess thats why my old motor is wider then the 302. will the 302 bolt up to the engine mounts that is already in the truck? would it be a good idea to rebuild the 351 at a later date instead of going with a 302?
yes the 302 will bolt up with no issues there. What year 302 did you get?Issues...the windsor power steering pump will need some work to bolt to the 302. also if you have a automatic trans. the 302 in 1980-96 changed how they are balanced so the flex plate is 50 oz. Before 1980 they are 28 oz and thats what all windsors have so you might need a flex plate or you will have a vibration. On the flex plate there are two sizes 164 tooth and 157 tooth. So hopefully you got the right flex plate on the 302 when you bought it.
