Does anybody know whether the 98 F150 2wd has 4wheel abs or just rear? It has disk in the front and drums in the rear. The brake light and abs light are on. I changed out a rear speed sensor on a dodge dakota with the same problem and it fixed it. Some people say it could be the front sensors. I have read that some people have a 98 and they do not have front abs just rear. Also where is a good place to get a rear speed sensor or is it a dealer item. I would appreciat any help. I have also replaced both front and rear brakes.
You will need to look at the front wheel spindles to see if there are any sensors there. Only the 4WABS system will have them. That is the quickest way to determine what you have.
Most likely, the rear diff sensor is open-circuited. Check it with a meter and see. Extremely common failure on Ford's trucks. Will probably cover better than 75% of the failures with your symptoms.
You can also look at the master cylinder. RABS has a relatively small & simple unit directly under the MC. 4WABS has a the large pump/accumulator unit & mass of brake lines. 4WABS was standard on Lariat & optional on others in '98.
The brake light on dash indicates low brake fluid or parking brake.
The rear speed sensor also feeds the speedometer & cruise control.
