Funny 98 Expedition Speedometer / Odometer

I have a 98 Expedition with an analog (at least its a needle) speedometer and a mechanical odometer. Sometimes when I start the car, the speedometer and odometer don't work at all. Sometimes they needle up and are fine. The previous owner was a little vague about why, but I think a wire was interrupted to cause this and then put back together.

Does anyone know what color wire going to the dash of a 98 expedition will have this affect so I can follow it down to see if it was incorrectly fixed somewhere down the line? The bundle to my dash has maybe 20 wires and knowing which color would do this will help me repair this very annoying problem. Feel free to email me at fordguy11111 at yahoo and/or post something here.

Thanks

your best bet would be to visit the local dealer and see if they will let you paruse the shop manual.

Not really needed. Quite a few around here have shop manuals and can provide whatever is needed.

In order to locate the correct data, we need to know whether 2- or 4-wheel drive and whether or not you have 4-wheel ABS (probably) as there may be variations on where the VSS signal is originated. Engine and which transmission is installed (read code from door label) are also helpful in getting the correct information the first time.

That said, it's probably coming from a transmission-mounted VSS on that model but I'd have to look it up to be certain.

no doubt, but if time was an issue, and said parties with manuals aren't online, that wouldn't help much. that's all.

I have an Expedition 5.4L, 4wd, Eddie with anti-lock brakes. If there is a place I can get the manual online, please let me know. So if the transmission input wire is flakey, this could cause this problem? Any help to find out where to look for the wire break or sensor failure would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

If the only indication is of the speedometer and odometer intermittently not working and there are no other faults (shifting issues, CEL/ O/D flashing, ABS warning, etc), then the cluster or the feed through of the VSS signal at the GEM is likely the fault.

I'll try to post the drawing tonight when I get home from work.

I'm I reading this Expy... Pg.2 file right where it just shows one GY/BK wire from the GEM to the instrument cluster? Besides that there is speed control/servo amplifier. Nothing in here to show me which wire I might trace, unless these are referring to the entire bundle of wires. If you have any other drawings or advice on how to find the wire that keeps the speedometer/odometer on please let me know.

thanks

Sounds like a case of odometer tampering, which is highly illegal. It also means that you probably have a lot more miles on it than you think.
