Here's something that hapened to me recently that could have hapened to you. I am running a stock distributor on my 429 and the vacuum advance plate would get stuck on one of the plate screws and then it would be way advanced. Just might be spark knock from the same thing. I had to grind off one of the screws on the plate a little. It happened a couple of times till I figured it out. You should still check your filter for metal and change your oil, but might be something else to check out.
well finally got around to an oil change today, got a new filter and dumped in some shell 15-40. it idled a little smoother i noticed also on some freash oil.
cut open the old oil filter and there was mostly just gunk in there. i ran my finger through the paper "fins" and got some of that gunk on my finger, then took a magnet to see if anything was magnetic. and nothing was. i saw nothing shiney or anything that looked like metal shavings.
is there anything else i should look for?
ohh and my darn camera's batterys were dead so no pics till i pick some up.

NAPA oil filter for pretty much every ford pickup from 1965 to 1997 is 1515 part #. Sounds to me like she just pinged a lil from being hot and loaded up with gas.
ford4604bbl is on it, sounds like you loaded the carb up adn when you cranked it up it just spark knocked real bad. you said it went away when you drove it?
Actually, loading it up would keep if from detonating with extra fuel.
It was detonation due to the overheated cylinder heads, Once they cooled off a bit, it went away. Nothing to worry about.
