i finnaly got my high boy up and running pretty good and moving so i called my buddy over to go play in my mudd pit. well then he started geting cocky saying my truck is a pos<and it is> so i challenged him to a pull off.
i was in my 75 high boy, and he was in his 91 cebby scotsdale 4x4 350 cid manual 5spd trans turning brand new 33's.
well we both went at it in 2wd. and i was accualy surprised how well he did. all though he didnt win. lol. so we put em in 4wd and i murdered him in 4wd. but i was beating on my truck damn good. i had it in 2nd gear WOT and i finnaly let off after pulling him backwerds about 200 feet with all 4 of his tires locked up.
but anyways after i had stopped i got out to unhook the chain and my truck overheated.<meaning my rad cap spring thingy released> so i shut off the truck and let it cool down.
when i got back in it i started to take off and my motor knocked a little??
what the heck causes that to happen?
thanks
Mitch
the knocking went away right away. and it was not a piston hitting the head or anything like that. when it happend the motor was kind of dieing so i gave it some gas and it knocked.
thanks
Mitch
Change the oil and filter. Examine the oil for metal shavings.
And cut open the oil filter, inspect. Let us know what you find, and generally you can tell what kind bearing failed just by looking at it, most bearings in these old engines were made up of different metal compositions due to different tolerances and clearances needed. Good luck bro, I am glad to hear another Ford vs Chevy triumph, but in the end I think the chev won this time, as your poor ford suffered a little casualty.
It could have been loading up with gas, if you hadn't been running it that long and just fired it and got on it you could have had bad gas. Also it could have been you heated the oil up and it boiled the oil off and once it cooled a bit and you got the oil flowing again it cleared the knocking up. You may have done some damage but I would change the oil anyhow and check it for metal shavings,if nothing in there and no more knocking you should be alright.
Nope, his chevy is sitting in my shed with a blown clutch. he had to get towed home by the good ol ford.
ahah ill get some pics
and if i had bearing faliure wouldnt it still be knocking? it only did it for like 2 seconds. and only did it cus i almost stalled it and when i gave it soem more gas it went away and never did it again.
thanks for the help ill pull the oil filter for ya guys.
thanks
Mitch
ohh and guys, i dont know aht year/type of 460 is in this truck. how do i id it so i can get a new oil filter?
thanks
ford4604bbl is on it, sounds like you loaded the carb up adn when you cranked it up it just spark knocked real bad. you said it went away when you drove it?
yes, i started it, put it in 2nd and started taking off and it went knock, knock, knock, knock and stopped and has not done it again. i just went out there 20 mins ago and it fired right up and ran fine.
thanks
Mitch
The oil filter should be the same pn from 68-96, and most Ford V8's-the old pushrod types are identical from what I remember. If you don't want to spend alot of time with the parts guy just tell him you need one for a 78 F250 460 2wd.
I learned that the hard way dealing with a young parts guy(the older guys know-without a computer) he was snippy so I made him look up a 429 in a 74 F250 4x4 and waste both our time-at his expense.
+1 on oil change and cutting open the filter. You may or may not see alot of bearing stuff-depends on engine condition. I'd say after toying with that bowtie it got hot enough to expand everything a tad more and may be an indication you need to re-bearing it-I hope not tho.
Since it seems to have stopped, just keep an ear on it after the oil change, 460's are pretty tough, and it may last for along time yet.
Mebbe throw in some aftermarket guages-much easier to keep track of things vrs. the stock ones.
Good luck and keep us posted!
First reading your post, it sounded worse than what it has turned out to be. Glad to hear that. Secondly, I'm glad you kicked the crap out of that chebby.

thanks for clearing up the oil filter info for me. the guy at the local parts store i go to either give me the wrong prices on things or gives me the wrong parts. so i try not to deal with him so much.
the guy i bought it from said that the motor was rebuilt. i have 130 give or take 5 psi on all cyilnders so its a tight motor yet.
i kinda dought i spun a bearing or anything for that matter.
ill change oil on the thing tonight and take some pics of the oil filter for you guys to look at.
well i did kick the **** out of the cebby but now i have to do a clutch job on the thing, hahahah so it was a win/PINA loss.
but thats what old trucks are for right beating the **** atta right?
thanks for the help ill have a few more pics l8er tonight hopefully.
thanks again
