side oiler
Far as regular factory production R and Q codes the centeroiler is correct. With the sideoiler introduced late in 64 this would have been well into the 65 production year. But as we know there are always exceptions. One could have been installed by a dealer or Holman Moody even. And I'm certain there were some test mules along the way. If you had the money you could pretty much get what you wanted. If your friend wants to be 100% numbers correct I'd think the centeroiler is the way to go. But if he has or knows of a nice sideoiler he wants to use as an alternative that's cool too. It was a pretty common upgrade if the original engine blew or was removed. Back then not many thought we'd be doing concours resto's some 40+ years later. So the end use of the car would factor into the equation as well.
See Glenn I would have guessed that wrong...as I thought they were avialable Mid year 63 ? i know my dads Bud had an original to the build from the factory HP 390 in a 60 Starliner!! with a 3 on the tree......wicked fast for a production car even back then!!
Wow the HP 390 in the 60 Starliner are nice cars!!!
Yep the sideoiler block was originally designed for the SOHC as the 90 day wonder. It was Hot Rod in Jan 65 that ran the first (or one of the first) articals. The first prototype cammer was based on a topoiler with press in freeze plugs. And the spark plug holes were at the bottom on the heads vs production heads where they were moved to the top. I remember Shoe talking about a very early sideoiler block he once saw from Feb of 65 with a C5AE-G casting number. The sideoiler galley was pretty crudely shaped and appeared to be a wooden form part of the mold with putty filled in the detail. So even tho it was designed in 64 it seems the earliest castings were early 65 dated. I wish I could remember more details. But this old brain ain't getting any younger. And it's been a while since I've researched it.

LOL Yeah my damn problem is I have bits and piece's of all kinds of motors in my heads..and sometimes they cross over to one another....LOL.. and you know me jumping back and forth between relatives with Chev's and Mopars..and 460 based builds and then the FE's will really screw with your brain!!! LOL.. But I love it..anything the goes fast you know me!!! At my age turning a wrench is easier than working out having sex !!
But when it comes down too it and "I" dont have to do any work !!! I'am all for that one!!
